Help me settle an arguement on Naruto and anime eyes? (All anime fans welcomed!)?

Akatsuki’s Artist-un asked:

Okay… so I’m a fanatic over Naruto. I began drawing anime because of this show and I love anime because of this show! Well… I was talking with my group of friends that are fanatics over anime too. They all love Naruto but only two of them as much as me. Well then one of them told me Naruto shouldn’t be considered an anime or manga. My mouth dropped. She then told me that the eyes aren’t anime like. Neither is how they are drawn. Here is how Naruto is drawn: http://nekozumi.deviantart.com/art/NARUTO-Together-Again-59437633

Then here is how she says the eyes are supposed to look always:

http://gchanmaiden.deviantart.com/art/Anime-Eye-Coloring-Tutorial-28552569

She says they need to be big and bubbly. I scoff her for that.

If you watch Naruto, then could you imagine Sasuke or Itachi with big bubbly eyes!!??

She’s into Shoujo and I’m into Shonen. So they are basically two different drawing types too right?

So who’s right? I say that Naruto is considered an anime…
and that that type of eyes are fine. I think they are better than bubbly ones even! She says that it shouldn’t be considered one and that it’s not good at all. And she thinks that it’s also only to be bubbly eyes.

So tell me what you think and gimme some stuff to show her she is wrong. If she is which I think I have stuff to back me up with but she won’t look at it:

Sorry for all the links but I have em. ANyways, say what you want to back up either side of the arguement and give the sides stuff to back themselves up!!!
You all have good answers so far. Also she mentioned the hair isn’t right. Now… there is something wrong wtih that definately. A quote: “You need to have the eyes look good and people won’t care about the hair. But Naruto doesn’t have good eyes or hair”.

I’m pretty good friends with her so please, I need stuff just to back my side up. I don’t want to completely offend her since she’s my friend.
First of all… Thank you to everyone who is agreeing with me. It’s going to be difficult to decide the best answer!

Anglewing: I don’t just stick with Naruto. I watch death note, fma, Bleach, Blood+, and I finished Shaman King. It’s just that she pointed out Naruto.

To others: I never thought about Kisame or Kakashi! Yikes! even gaara. Can you imagine: I’m going to kill you. I try to show anger and death in my eyes but all there is is the happy bubbles interrupting it. lol.

You go!!! Naruto is so an anime!! And your right they are just two different styles of drawing. Take vegetables for example, (i know this is a weird anology, but bear with me) wether they’re steamed or cooked they’re still vegetables right? Same with the anime. Two different ways of drawing, but still the same thig, anime!

It is totally anime. masashi kishimoto just did a different kind of style of manga, it was something related to dbz. he said that in one of the naruto manga volumes. also it is an anime because its from japan. a not anime would be considered as avatar.

also, your picture is pretty good, i can only draw heads of naruto while you can draw them all… sigh…

Naruto is definately anime. You should ask her what makes her an anime connoisseur. The have eyes near nothing to do with it. There are many different styles of art and anime is japanese animation. You should show her the wiki page:
It says large eyes are a common characteristic to anime but not all anime has it.

The artist of Naruto was a huge fan of Dragonball Z, Nishi learned his drawing style and it is Anime. There are differences within Japan, I used to live there, so some manga/comics are more widely bought by women, and others by men. Those cultural differences don’t really matter in the U.S., or U.K., its a matter of style and opinion. All true anime currently is based out of Japan, and many storylines chinese. But like hip hop, there are many versions.

Um sorry no offense but your friend is no anime otaku if she doesn’t even know that there are different drawing styles. I would hate it if all animes had those bubbly eyes. I personally like the eyes in naruto and others better then those stupid eyes of shoujo. Don’t listen to your friend naruto is totally anime, if it wasn’t then the charecters would not die. Because in cartoons charecters don’t die, they keep comming back. I would think sasuke would look horrible with bubbly eyes. You are right and she is wrong.

Anime is simply a general term referring to a type of animation that comes from Japan. The illustrator and writer of Naruto is Kishimoto, an author from Japan and is published weekly in Shonen Jump. Basically this is ANIME and MANGA at it’s core.
Now if you are talking about the eyes, You can refer your friend to Rorounin Kenshin and Dragonball Z both known japanese anime and manga and show her the different techniques used in those. Example: Body structures, coloring, Height and weight proportion, background techniques and eyes.
Drawing styles is not necessarily in anime works only. You often see diff. drawing styles in american cartoons too; Spongebob squarepants eyes are different from Kim possible or Superman right? :)

OK number1 I’m a huge Naruto fan to and yes its a total anime but every artist that has a comic/anime draws eyes different(including me) you cant really expect every anime to have the same eyes and hair the writer of naruto is just as good as any other writer so really it doesn’t truly mater because what would happen if every character had weird hair and bubbly eyes try imagining gaara like that so really im sort of like you and yes i think your right

I don’t see where is says you have to have bubbly eyed characters in a manga to be considered. Anime has many styles and does not have to have big bubbly eyes to be considered anime. I am a huge Naruto fan and I couldn’t imagine Itachi or Kakashi for that matter bubbly eyed….maybe as chibi’s though. Well you are totally right of course, guess you know more than they do!

I was just imagined Pein with bubbly eyes…..

    ——-
haha that made me laugh to imagine kisame or gaara saying they are going to kill someone and look all bubbly happy. zomg especially orochimaru. This page has some funny and cute Naruto images and mixed with others.

    here’s how i remember it
    80′s= Japanese animation
    early 90′s =Japanime
and sometime in the mid 90′s that shortened to just anime

now since Naruto comes from Japan and is animation you do the math for your friend
like any art (and it is an art genera) these things are constantly evolving. the eyes she’s talking about were the Japanese trying very hard to mimic Disney who were cornering the market in the cartoon world

    yea your right they are 2 different types of anime and sasuke and itachi with bubbly eyes would just make me wish they’d have a yaoi together even more ^_^;

Everyone has different styles of drawing, but that doesn’t mean that any one style is wrong. Besides, every character can’t have perfect looks. That would get boring and annoying.

  16. angelwing1020 Says:

    Liana

Actually anime eyes can be drawn differently. Each anime artists have different anime eye styles. Take this list of animes for example:
Wish, Runouni Kenshin, Skip Beat, Shaman King (yes it is an anime), fruit basket, X 1999, Tsubasa Chornicle, or Dragon Ball Z.
Look at the character’s eyes. They’re all different, not one eye is the same as another anime artist. They’re all anime, but drawn differently. If they weren’t, then if would be so boring and you wouldn’t be able to tell which artist drew what!

Maybe you should check out at the library different manga (its the same as anime) series and show them to her the different anime drawing styles. Instead of just sticking to just Naruto, you should spread your interest in anime outside that area and maybe you won’t have an arguement like this.

Note: I’m not saying to ditch Naruto and like another anime I’m trying to say try looking at different manga/anime sometimes.

Naruto is an anime!!!!! Just because they don’t have big bubbly eyes doesn’t mean that they aren’t an anime show….I mean seriously……..I would be REALLY scared if Sasuke or Itachi had big bubbly eyes…….AHHHHH!!!!!!! *shudders* I agree with you fully…..And anyways, there are LOTS of anime shows with characters who DON’T have bubbly eyes like DeathNote and Bleach. Your friend in crazy….(no offense)

I can c wat she means by different hair and eyes…but u r ryt, anime is basically a japanese cartoon, so how can it not be anime. Also people have different drawing styles, if it woz all the same, then there would be no point in it at all…i hope i helped

Naruto is an anime but its just that usually shojo isdrawn with biggish eyes P: Tel her that not all animes have to have big bubbly eyes… I draw with the really big eyes but I still love Naruto! But I actually think that the anime naruto is drawn kind of sloppy, I like the manga better >

Every anime and manga has different styles of drawing, whether it is the eyes or the hair, etc. You said that your friend(s) are into Shoujo and you are into Shonen, right? What I’m trying to say about this is that the differences between Shoujo and Shonen is that other than what they are targeting (shoujo-girl shonen-boys mostly), the styles is also different. Shoujo usually has big eyes for the characters while shonen doesn’t but my point is that NARUTO IS AN ANIME!!
